Janine got to the point where she could push off and turn in the sled. There were pucks all over the ice. She got to one that sat near a goal crease.

Rowena struggled to keep up. She’d fallen over a couple more times. Each time, the coach strapped her in a bit tighter.

Ryan was practising his shooting. He stretched out his right arm and whipped his blade through the puck. It went into the top corner of the net. And then he did it again. And again.

Janine flipped over the stick so that the blade side was on the ice. The puck nestled against the long blade. She flicked her wrist, trying to send the puck on net.

It moved about six inches. Sideways.

“Ha!” the coach cried. “I saw that! It’s hard to control the puck with a long blade. Try the shorter blade. You’ll find you can control and pass and shoot. And those hockey gloves you’re wearing. Too bulky! You need lighter gloves, without the big cuffs.”

The coach handed Janine two sticks with shorter blades. Janine took them and gave her the long-bladed sticks back.

Ryan passed a puck toward Janine. This time she was able to handle it. She could feel the puck on the end of the stick. She saw that Rowena was close by, so she slid a pass toward her friend’s sled.

Rowena reached down to take the pass. The puck hit the long blade of her stick and bounced away. Rowena’s sled rocked, but at least she didn’t fall over.

The coach blew her whistle. “Okay, you two. Believe it or not, for the first time, you weren’t terrible. Don’t get me wrong, you’re both bad. But, if you want to try this again, you’re welcome to come out.”
